Bordeaux tradition meets Swabian MeadowFruit

jg

Château Lamothe is located about 30 km north of Bordeaux and 12 km from Margaux and Pauillac, in the Côtes de Bourg appellation in the Gironde. The region enjoys a moderate, predominantly oceanic climate with rainfall distributed fairly evenly throughout the year. Geologically, the Bourgeais is characterized by a limestone subsoil with layers of marl. The slopes along the Dordogne are covered with silt, while the hinterland features soils composed of sand and gravel from Pugnac.

Chateau quer
Situated on the “Rive Droite”, the estate traditionally cultivates Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. Like something out of a fairy tale, the château lies as if in a deep slumber, surrounded by vineyards, orchard meadows, and forests. Of the estate’s approximately 30 hectares, around 20 hectares are planted with old vines, most of them over 30 years of age. This rare gem was built in the 18th century and cared for with deep affection for the region and its wines by the Pousse Pessonnier family for 124 years. In 1900, François Pessonnier, the great-grandfather—already a winemaker in Lansac—acquired Château Lamothe and its vineyards. In the mid-19th century, the owner of Château Lamothe, Bordeaux wine merchant Pierre Charpentier, helped the wines of the estate gain remarkable recognition by
exporting them to the United States. Evidence of this is a mouth-blown glass bottle found during excavations in the Sacramento area. In the second edition of Bordeaux et ses Vins published in 1868, Charles Cocks listed Château Lamothe among the “crus bourgeois” of the Côtes de Bourg. Surrounded by wine cellars built at the end of the 18th century, the château represents an authentic architectural ensemble—one we aim to preserve and revitalize with new ideas.

A Place of Stillness

Amid gentle hills, where the light of the Dordogne gilds the landscape and cypress trees whisper in the breeze, lies Château Lamothe and its great cedar—a sanctuary of tranquility, created for wine and for time. Here, far from haste and noise, nature and culture merge into a harmonious symphony. Every morning begins with veils of mist drifting over the vines; every evening ends in a shimmer of copper and gold. What may seem, at first glance, like pure idyll is in truth a place of focused creation. Among old vines, handpicked grapes, and the traces of generations past, a philosophy of wine emerges—one rooted in patience, care, and origin. Jörg Geiger has chosen this place to build a bridge: between the culture of the Southwest and the precision of craftsmanship, between French terroir and Swabian passion for authenticity. Thus, Lamothe becomes more than a château; it becomes a symbol of connection—between landscape and people, history and future, pleasure and awareness.

Regenerative Agriculture

hand boden

A new chapter of land management is beginning at Château Lamothe: the systematic implementation of regenerative agriculture. The goal is to build a permanently healthy, living soil structure on which, in the future, not only vines but also pear trees will thrive.

The first step involved deep soil loosening to break up compaction, improve water infiltration, and bring oxygen into the soil. In parallel, Effective Microorganisms (EM) were applied – a synergistic blend of bacteria, yeasts, and fungi that activates soil life and strengthens the microbial balance.

Next, the grass cover was lightly tilled and a diverse cover crop was sown: phacelia, oilseed radish, and buckwheat promote deep rooting, organic matter, and new impulses for humus formation. Buckwheat also provides plant-based oils—an often overlooked contribution to stable soil structure.

This cover crop mixture creates the foundation for climate-resilient, robust soils and prepares the vineyards not only for new rows of vines but also for the planting of trees. In this way, a landscape emerges that naturally unites viticulture and orchard culture.

The Philosophy – In Harmony with Nature and Culture

fsser
Behind every wine from Lamothe lies a single guiding idea: true quality does not arise from mastering nature, but from working with it. The philosophy is both simple and demanding - it follows the principle of balance. The soil is not exploited but nourished. The vine is not forced but guided. And every intervention serves only to preserve what is already perfect by nature. Here, Jörg Geiger weaves together French winemaking tradition with his Swabian heritage - with the mindset of a craftsman who leaves nothing to chance, yet forces nothing. In this way, a culture of attentiveness emerges: from the cover crops growing between the rows of vines to the biodiversity along the slopes, and finally to the gentle use of wood and time in the cellar.

The Style – Elegance with Depth

A wine from Lamothe is never loud, yet it lingers in the mind. It speaks with the voice of its origin—quiet, clear, and full of layers. Its style follows no trend but an inner conviction: that true greatness arises from balance. Between fruit and structure, freshness and maturity, tension and calm. Each cuvée bears the signature of its terroir—chalky-mineral, finely textured, with that cool elegance that only patience can create. In the glass, a quiet intensity unfolds. These are wines that do not insist on attention but reveal themselves—sip by sip, moment by moment. They accompany a meal not to dominate, but to connect: food, conversation, feeling. Thus, the style of Château Lamothe stands for a new form of classicism—grounded, sensitive, uncompromising in quality, yet carried by a lightness that moves rather than impresses.
